Fee Priority and Proration
Typically, a weighted proration method is used when posting partial transactions. This means that the fees with the highest priority (i.e., lowest priority number) are paid off first before distributing money to the fee with the next highest priority. Partial payments are prorated according to both the priority of the fee and the "weight" of the fee. The weight of the fee is equal to a percentage of the total fees with a balance for that fee priority. Weighting is based on current balances.
Fee priorities are used to determine the order in which fees should be paid off. If you change the priority of a fee, the fees are re-sorted to match the new priority. You can make these changes to the priorities when:
Multiple fees can be assigned the same priority number. If fees are assigned the same priority, the amount of the transaction is split among all of the fees with that priority number.
When working with partial credits, the reverse weighted proration may be used. This means that the credits start with the lowest priority fees with a balance (i.e., those with the highest number) and pay backward by priority.
Weighted proration and reverse weighted proration are determined by the payment type code. To change which proration a payment type is using, contact your system administrator.
Say there are three fees of equal amounts due (fees A, B, and C) with priorities of 5, 10, and 10, respectively. Since fee A has a priority of 5, it is paid off first. The remaining amount of the transaction is spit equally between fees B and C, which both have priority of 10.
Fee A is $30 dollars and the owner makes a payment of $35. Fee A is paid off in full. If fees B and C have different amounts due, the payment for each fee is weighted according to the amount due. Say fee B is $10 and fee C is $20. There is $5 left over after paying off fee A, so that amount is prorated between fees B and C. The system applies $1.66 to fee B and $3.34 to fee C for a total of $5.
Fee Priority Amount Due Weighted Payment Remaining Due
A 5 $30.00
B 10 $10.00 $1.66 $8.34
C 10 $20.00 $3.34 $16.66
Total   $60.00 $5.00 $25.00
