Each case has a style, which may be referred to as the name or title of the case (e.g., In the best interest of Jane Smith,
a minor child). The case style is entered on the Detail tab of the case record, and it is displayed at the top of all the case tabs. Case styles can be entered manually for each
case or they can be automatically assigned by the system.
Available Fields
The Available Fields section lists all the information that can be used to create a case style format. You can insert custom text, a party name,
or a carriage return if you want to start a new line. Select a field (e.g., custom text) from the list to add that information
to the case style format.
The Available Fields list includes all the types of parties that can be associated with the selected case type (e.g., plaintiff, defendant, applicant).
If you want the case style to display the name of a party, select the appropriate party type (e.g., applicant) from the Available Fields list.
When you select a party type from the list, additional options are displayed in the
Add a Case Style Format dialog box and you can choose how you want the names to be displayed in the case style.
Option |
Description |
Name Format |
Select the name format you want to use for the case style. The format you select is used for all party names in the case style
format you are creating. For example, if you selected Applicant from the Available Fields list and you choose First Last Name for the name format, all applicant names in case styles for the selected type of case will be displayed in first last format
(e.g., John Smith).
|
Number of Parties to Include |
If there are several parties involved in a case, you may not want all the party names to be displayed in the case style. Indicate
how many party names should be displayed in the case style (e.g., 3). If you always want all the party names to be displayed in the case style, select the All check box.
|
Separated by |
When a case style contains several names, the names are separated by a delimiter, usually a comma or semicolon. Enter the
delimiter you want the system to use when separating multiple names in a case style. If you want to place a comma and a space
between the party names, you need to indicate that here by entering a comma and pressing the space bar. “SP” is displayed
to indicate that a space is inserted.
|
Text to append if there are more parties than those displayed |
If there are several parties involved in a case, but you chose to include only a certain number of names in the case style,
you can enter any text you want displayed at the end of the list to indicate that there are other names not displayed in the
style. For example, if you enter et al., those exact words will be displayed at the end of a list of names when all the names cannot be included.
|
After you select a field to add to the case style and enter any additional information that is needed for a party or custom
text, click Add (ALT+A) to add that information to the case style. The information is inserted in the Show these fields in this order section.
When you select a party name from the Available Fields list and add it to the case style, that field is removed from the Available Fields list since you can only insert a party name once in a case style. If you select the carriage return or the custom text option
and click Add, those fields are not removed from the list and you can enter as many as you need.
Show these fields in this order
When you insert information into the case style, the information is displayed in the order you add it. However, you can move
items around within the case style if the information should be displayed in a different order.
In the Show these fields in this order section, select the item you want to move. For example, if you want to move some custom text that you have entered, click
anywhere within that line of text to select it. You can then click << Move Left (ALT+L) to shift that component of the case style one place to the left. Click Move Right >> (ALT+R) to shift that information one place to the right.
After you have added a party name, carriage return, or custom text to the case style, you can remove it if needed. Select
the item to remove in the Show these fields in this order section, and click Remove (ALT+M). If you remove a party (e.g., applicant), that field is placed back in the Available Fields list so you can add it later if needed.
